Officials: Fires At Dunbar Elementary In OKC Intentionally Set

Posted: Updated:

Arson investigators will be spending the day at the former Dunbar Elementary School on N.E. 7th Street in Oklahoma City, after a fire broke out early Monday morning.

Battalion Chief Tony Davis told News 9 fire crews rushed to the former school just after 3 a.m. Monday. When they got to the scene, heavy smoke was seen coming from the building.

It did not take long for crews to realize arson investigators needed to be called. There were two fires set inside: one on the roof and the other on the first floor. Davis said this is very similar to a call the Oklahoma City Fire Department responded to about six weeks ago, which was also at Dunbar Elementary.

"It looks like there's someone trying to set the building on fire. Right now we are just trying to what we can to investigate it," Davis said.

The school was an Oklahoma City Public School for almost 90 years before the district closed it in 2010 due to low enrollment. It sold to developer, Old School Properties, in 2015 for $535,000.
