OKLAHOMA CITY -

Our cameras are often sent to scenes of unspeakable tragedy and we meet people during their toughest times. We decided to pay another visit to Gayla Sossamon, who spoke with us in the early morning of November 12, 2015 when a fire leveled her home.

Sossamon had only lived there four months with three roommates

“When stuff like this happens, all you want is for your parents to be here,” she said.

The home they now have is literally filled with love. Furniture like a dining room table, a TV, and clothing  are just a few items family, friends and strangers gave them. They also received nearly $2,000 in gift cards and cash.

The things she treasures most are priceless, like a jar with items salvaged from the home, and a photo of her grandmother who passed away six years ago. However the lessons she has learned are invaluable .

“The money is great and the donations are great, we appreciate it. But the advice I say to people is sometimes you just need someone to talk to. Just be a friend,” Sossamon said.

Sossamon and her roommates have since gotten renter’s insurance. She says even the smell of a candle brings back terrible memories, but she relies on her faith and her family to pull her through.
