Sophisticated scammers are targeting OG&E customers conning them into pay fake unpaid bills.

The energy company just learned of the scam today and now is warning all of its customers to be aware.

The crooks have upped their conning game. Their calls to your phone say it's OG&E calling, and they've even swiped the company automated recordings.

These scammers prey on the panic that sets in when you're told you've missed a payment. Posing as OG&E, the customer is told to call a 1-800 number to pay the past due bill. And if they don't pay their power will be shut off.

“The customer would call this 800 number and they would actually hear the same type of recording of options that we have on our phone,” said Kathleen O’Shae, an OG&E spokesperson.

But no matter what option the person chose, it always lead them to a person ready to take their money.

OG&E spokesperson, Kathleen O'Shea, says while the scammers were close to mimicking the company they did two things wrong.

“If you call someone and they ask you for your credit card number over the phone that should also tip you off because we don't do that,” she said.

The company uses a third party vendor for all credit card payments over the phone.

But the first red flag from the scam is the phone call made informing them of the supposed missed payment.

“If you have a past due bill we are going to send you notices before we are going to turn you off,” O’Shae said.

At this time, OG&E doesn't know how long the scam has been going on but they want all their customers to be aware.
