OKLAHOMA CITY -

Every night, millions of people have trouble either falling or staying asleep. Most people think there's something physically wrong with them, but a new study suggests otherwise.

It seems social media may be keeping us awake. This may have you thinking twice before taking one last peek at Facebook before bed. The risk -- less sleep.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania followed more than 1,700 young adults between 19 and 32. They found most participants spend more than an hour a day on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Snapchat. And most check their social media accounts at least 30 times a week.

Researchers then found the majority of participants report medium or high levels of "sleep disturbance." These findings are considered the first piece of evidence showing social media may impact our quality of sleep.

However, experts emphasize more studies are needed to see if there's an actual connection between social media and sleep.
