POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY, Oklahoma -

An Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper who was hit by a vehicle while he was working a crash has leg, head and internal injuries.

The injured trooper is 16 year OHP veteran Jason Richardson.

“To hear that this has happened to one of your own, it's gut-wrenching,” said Lt. John Vincent with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Troopers rushed to the scene along Interstate 40 near Shawnee to help Richardson.

“We are a large family and we are going to go to the need of one of our brothers, it's just what we do,” Vincent said.

Richardson was working several crashes and spin outs due to freezing fog that caused slick spots.

Suddenly another vehicle crashed into Richardson as he stood by his patrol car.

“It's one of those that tears at your heart until you figure out exactly what is going on with one of your partners,” Vincent told News 9.

The area was shut down for five hours.

Richardson was rushed to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

Several troopers lined the streets outside the hospital to show their support for their injured partner.

“It's the brotherhood of the badge,” Vincent explained.  “We would do it not only for ourselves, but any other law enforcement agency out there."

Troopers escorted his mother all the way to the hospital to get her to her son's side as quickly as possible.

Richardson's condition was a much better outcome than what many had feared.

“It's not a call that we like to get at all, but we understand what we do every time we put the uniform on to go to work that this is something that could happen to us,” Vincent said.

Richardson is listed in serious condition at OU Medical Center.

The driver of the SUV that hit the trooper was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital.

No word on any possible charges.
