5 Students Arrested After Fights, Threats At Capitol Hill HS

Five arrested were made after several fights and threats at Capitol Hill High School.

All five students who were arrested and detained have been brought to the Berry House while the DA determines what charges will be filed.

News 9 cameras were the only television crew there, as three of those students were hauled out of class.

Oklahoma City Police say they were able to identify them from both pictures and videos that were posted on social media. Police say one of the two students arrested for making threats to shoot up the school, showed up at the district's administration office to complain.

“It was determined that this student had made some direct threats on social media against the school, and against some administrators at the school,” said Captain Paco Balderrama with the Oklahoma City Police Department Public Information office.

News 9 found one video taken by a student that shows one of the fights that broke out on Tuesday. It went viral with more than 56,000 views on Facebook.

Police told News 9 both the boy who is seen throwing the punch and the boy who is seen stomping on the student who was knocked out cold, were arrested.

The student who assaulted a teacher who tried to break up one of the fights was also arrested.

“We do believe it may have been gang related and that is something that we are looking into - whether it was a feud between two rival gangs that's also a possibility,” said Capt. Balderrama.

Despite the fights and social media threats to shoot up the school, classes were not cancelled. But police did increase patrols around the campus.

Tiffany Beasley has a daughter who is a senior at Capitol Hill High, and is glad to see the added police presence.

“They need to get a control of the gang violence here,” said Beasley.

Parents were also allowed to pick up their children early from school in light of the events and many parents because of the early morning arrests.

The Oklahoma City Public School District did issue a response saying:

"We are aware of disturbing student altercations that were captured on video and posted to social media. The incident happened at Capitol Hill High School on Tuesday, January 12. Oklahoma City Public School administrators contacted law enforcement immediately, and we continue working with the Oklahoma City Police Department through this ongoing investigation. As a precaution police are providing additional security at the school today, and we have notified parents/guardians. The safety, and civility of our schools cannot be compromised, strict disciplinary action will be taken against all perpetrators."
