Americans are spending more time on devices like computers and smartphones. That is causing many to experience "digital eye strain."

It's safe to say most Americans spend a majority of their day in front of some sort of screen, and it's doing serious damage to our eyes. A new survey from the "Vision Council" shows nearly 80 percent of Americans who suffer from "digital eye strain" use two or more devices at the same time.

Researchers also discovered most of the adults in their study suffer from symptoms like dry, irritated eyes, blurred vision, headaches as well as neck and back pain.

Doctors say the human eyes were not created to stare at screens for hours upon hours. However, there is a way you can prevent digital eye strain. It's called the "20-20-20 rule."

"For every 20 minutes that you're working up close take to 20 second break to look at something 20 feet further away and that just allows your eyes to refresh and start back fresh," said Dr. Jessi Lee, Optometrist.

It's also suggested you push our screen further back and increase the font size on your devices to lessen eye strain.

Doctors also recommend getting a routine eye exam every year.
