Dean's Blog: Trevor Knight's Legacy

Posted: Updated:

Trevor Knight announced on his Twitter account that he will join Kevin Sumlin and transfer from Oklahoma to Texas A&M where he is eligible immediately for the 2016 season.

Knight was a consummate leader by example for Bob Stoops from the minute he stepped on the OU campus. A true freshman redshirt in 2012, Knight lit up the OU defense and shocked most everyone by beating out Blake Bell and being named the starter in the fall camp of 2013. He and Bell shared time that season but he played sensationally in the 2014 Sugar Bowl upset at the Sugar Bowl and was one of the leading Heisman Trophy candidates that offseason.

Consistency plagued Knight in 2014 as the Sooners struggled to an 8-5 season. Baker Mayfield won a hotly contested QB battle in the offseason and fall camp and was named the 2015 starter. While Mayfield became the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, Knight maintained a good attitude and was voted a team captain.

After the TCU game that saw Mayfield injured and Knight struggle in relief, Cody Thomas moved ahead of the San Antonio native and was the back-up for the OSU and Clemson games.

Knight leaves a legacy that will endure forever. His Alabama performance cemented that. But so did his maturity, leadership based unabashedly on his Christian principles, and heading to College Station with his head held high.

In some 35 years in this business and having known every OU quarterback since Jack Mildren in 1969, I can say that I have enjoyed and have as much respect for Trevor Knight as any of them. I’ll forever remember his extra firm handshake and a look-you-in-the-eye approach that was always accompanied with an upbeat, team-first comment. Having gone through some of the same challenges that Knight experienced, I always made a point to keep an eye on him and encourage him when appropriate. Lord knows he’s done that to countless players, students, and kids along the way.

Trevor Knight is the kind of young man that kids should emulate. A fresh start was needed and transferring to the school where he’d originally committed might just work swimmingly.

But whether Trevor Knight ever plays a down for the Aggies, he’s destined for success beyond football field. The born leader has too much substance to him to fail.

I interviewed Trevor countless times, but knew when we talked a couple of days before the Orange Bowl that this would be the last. Thanks for checking it out.
