Oklahoma State linebacker Seth Jacobs, a starter at outside linebacker for the past two seasons, announced his plans to retire from football on Tuesday. The redshirt junior has one season of eligibility remaining but has already graduated with a degree in strategic communications.

“I have decided to leave the game and not return for my fifth year,” Jacobs said in a Facebook post. “I have had a wonderful learning experience while living in Stillwater and am forever grateful for the opportunity. I am beginning to value my body, health and well-being more than extending my career. Therefore, I will not be playing my last year of eligibility and will pursue a career outside of football.”

Jacobs has dealt with a long string of injuries during his playing career going back to high school. He explained a few injuries, namely his AC separation last season and spinal stenosis, have been particularly problematic.

“My neck has been a problem for me since my sophomore year of high school. If I get hit just right or jarred in the wrong way, I get numbness and shooting pains that go through my arms. When I was younger it didn’t happen to me nearly as much. This last season it was not uncommon for me to get a stinger (numbness and shooting pains) any day I made contact with my head. With that being said, playing football does not take precedence over the quality of life I want to live.”

Jacobs broke out as a redshirt sophomore in 2014 finishing with 92 tackles, good for third on the team. He finished fourth on the team this season with 65 stops and added a pair of interceptions and one sack.
