There was hope for the No. 18 Oklahoma Women’s basketball team as they took on No. 4 Baylor, but that glimmer of chance came and went as the Bears were able to show why they’ve been part of college basketball’s elite for some time now and won the conference matchup 78-68.

The Sooners led for most of the first quarter, but the Bears were able to put together a run led by Niya Johnson and Nina Davis that gave them a five-point lead by the end of the frame and a 12-point lead by intermission.

Oklahoma valiantly fought back in the third quarter as T’ona Edwards and Peyton Little caught fire and brought OU within three points with a chance to cut the deficit even more before the end of the frame, but the Sooners turned the ball over and Baylor’s Johnson converted a fast-break layup while getting fouled to give the Bears a 56-50 lead as the fourth quarter approached.

Peyton Little missed a pair of free-throws for the Sooners to start the final frame, and Baylor’s Kristy Wallace nailed a three pointer on the other end to deflate a resilient OU squad. Oklahoma (10-3) continued to fight, but weren’t able to narrow the gap enough to pull off the upset.

Alexis Jones scored a career-high for Baylor (14-1) with 25 points and seven rebounds, while Davis totaled 22 points in the Baylor win. Johnson also excelled for the Bears with 10 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds.

Little led the Sooners in scoring with 19 points to go with six assists, while Gabbi Ortiz added 14 points. Edwards contributed her 11 points off the bench.
