NORMAN, Oklahoma -

A Moore tornado survivor is set to take the spotlight Saturday at the world-famous Santa Anita Race Track in Arcadia, California.  “Josie The EF 5” will be the 10 horse in the third race of opening day.

The horse was born at Dr. Joe Carter’s Oklahoma Equine Hospital near Norman.  Her mother gave birth about the same time as the May 20th Moore tornado that killed 24 people, and hundreds of horses at nearby horse farm.

Dr. Carter was one of several veterinarians who rushed in and tried to save many of the horses, but sadly had to put most of the injured down.  This past April, Dr. Carter traveled down to Texas and bought a two-year-old filly at an auction.

The wife of Oklahoma Football legend Barry Switzer loves horses, and helped Dr. Carter name the horse “Josie The EF 5” because the horse was so spunky.

In July, Josie came in a close second at her very first race, which was against a group of horses with much more experience.  But it was at that race, that Dr. Carter ran into the owner of Josie’s mother, who told Dr. Carter that his horse was actually born at his Oklahoma Equine Clinic two and a half years ago.

“So maybe out of all of that bad that happened on May 20, and all of the horses that died in those elementary schools, the people that died in Moore, you know something good has come out of the ashes.  And maybe it’s “Josie The EF 5,” he said.

At 6 to 1 odds, Josie The EF 5 will be the 10 horse in the third race at Santa Anita on Saturday afternoon.
