In the metro, gas prices are as low as $1.50. And because of those prices, holiday experts expect more drivers on the road. But heavy traffic concerns, and potential bad weather issues, are not stopping anyone in Oklahoma from getting behind the wheel.

AAA estimates a record 91 million Americans will be hitting the road for the holidays. They say those numbers are up because gas prices are down.

At the Love's Travel stop off I-35 holiday travelers come in just as quickly as they leave. Many of these drivers heading home for the holidays.

“We are traveling back from Scottsdale where we were visiting family going back to home in Kansas City,” said the Brent VanderArk.

Two million more drivers are expected to travel this year compared to last according to AAA.

The VanderArk family left Arizona Wednesday night and drove through the night to avoid traffic and make in home to Kansas by dinner.

And the recent dip in gas prices has been driver's favorite holiday gift. AAA says cheap gas is fueling the increase in driver this year, marking the 7th consecutive year for the increase.

“They are really low, and for a guy like me I’ve got a big car that doesn't get as good of gas mileage especially when you got something like this on top of it, it's a help,” said Ryan.

Relief at the pump is one less thing drivers like Ryan have to worry about this year. His big concern is this weekend's winter weather threat.

“We … come back to Oklahoma City, and they we have to fly out to South Carolina for my wife's family and we are going to be flying out in and out of the storms. So it's going to be fun,” he said.

If you can AAA says avoid holiday traffic by traveling on the actual holiday.
