Edmond police on the lookout for a trio of men accused of ripping off an 89-year-old to the tune of $10,000.

Edmond police told News 9 this case of elderly exploitation was on-going for weeks, but they just got the call two days ago after one of three suspects apparently tried to get the victim to cash a $6,400 check.

“It’s a pretty low thing to do,” said Jennifer Wagnon, Edmond PD.

Edmond police want the three men accused of taking advantage of the man behind bars.

Police said it all started in late November when they approached the man at an Oklahoma City thrift store.

“And told him something needed to be fixed on his vehicle,” said Wagnon.

Police said they allegedly made a repair to the victim's car and then asked for payment.

Surveillance video at a Southside Walgreens caught one of the suspects walking out and getting in a white car after he tried to put $760 of the victim's money on a gift card.

It was declined.

The suspect then drove the victim to a CVS on S. May and tried the scheme with more than $1,000 dollars.

That was also unsuccessful.

In what seemed like a last ditch effort to get money out of the 89-year-old, police said the suspect took the man home to get his check book in Edmond, then to a bank.

“At least one kept coming back to the house for these checks,” said Wagnon.

With the help of the victim, police said the suspect made two withdrawals to pay for that car repair.

More than $1,900 in cash was handed over. But it didn't stop there.

“They just clearly have been taking advantage of him for several weeks now,” said Wagnon. “They had a system down. They’d figured out they had found somebody they were going to be able to exploit.”

After reviewing bank statements, police and bank officials said the victim unknowingly handed over nearly $10,000 in cash.
