NORMAN, Oklahoma -

A metro Army Reservist who is a single mom nearly lost her home, but local veterans stepped in to help.

The Dale K. Graham Veteran's Corner in Norman helps about 150 veterans each week with benefits and claims. This year, the group made the single mom its Christmas project.

“It took a lot from me to actually admit that I needed help, mainly because when you are in the military you are told, you know, man up,” said Rosa Florence.  “So I had to hit rock bottom before I actually admitted I need help,” she added.

Florence has been an Army Reservist with the 401st Engineer Company in Mustang for five years.

Several financial hardships hit her all at once.

“I was actually at the point of looking at homeless shelters,” Florence told News 9.

She lost her job, she was behind on rent, her car broke down, her utilities were turned off and the mother of four had not even thought about buying Christmas presents for her children yet.

“Things can only go so far down before they have to start coming back up,” Florence explained.

The Veterans Corner paid up Florence's rent and paid for her utilities to come back on. Then, a Norman veteran couple gave her $500 for Christmas and a Moore veteran couple gave her a truck.

“It's kind of made my day and it makes what we do all worth-while when you know that you've made a difference in someone's life,” said Dale K. Graham who runs the Veteran’s Corner.

“It'll actually be the best Christmas that any of us have ever had,” Florence said.

The Veteran's Corner sets up at Faith Pointe Baptist Church in Norman every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. All veterans are invited to go there to get help navigating the VA claims process.
