ELK CITY, Oklahoma -

Community members will gather at Elk City Airport Thursday afternoon to welcome home a wounded soldier from Sayre, Oklahoma, who had been undergoing treatment in Atlanta.

According to the Sayre Chamber of Commerce, Jason Palmer, Army CAV Scout 19D, sustained injuries when his patrol unit was hit by an IED back in 2007. His injuries has caused neurological impairment and ongoing seizures.

Since August, Palmer had been in Atlanta, undergoing intensive treatment at Shepherd Center. Now, he’s ready to return home to Sayre.

Palmer will arrive at Elk City Airport at 2 p.m. Thursday. Wednesday morning, the Elk City Police Department posted on its Facebook page, asking community members to come to the airport to show their support and welcome Palmer home. The post has since been shared more than 1,000 times.

Elk City police said Palmer will be escorted back to his home.
