With prices as low as $50 or less, unmanned aircraft — known as drones — are a popular Christmas gift this year.
Tom Kilpatrick is the first FAA authorized commercial aerial operator in Oklahoma.
Starting Monday, drone owners will be required to register with the FAA.
Kilpatrick — whose also had his pilot’s license for 32 years — said it’s a good idea.
“The rules are very simple where you can fly a drone. You have to fly it less than 400 feet above the ground, it has to remain in the line of sight from the operator, you have to be five miles away from an airport, unless you have permission,” he said.
Kilpatrick said a recent report shows there have been 158 incidents in the past two years where a drone came within 200 feet of another aircraft is a good reason for the need to register all drones.
