Judge Rules Adacia Chambers Competent To Stand Trial

STILLWATER, Oklahoma -

The driver charged in the fatal OSU Homecoming Parade crash is fit to stand trial. A judge ruled the trial will move forward despite the defense attorney's mental evaluation stating Adacia Chambers is not competent for trial.

In October, the District Attorney's office charged Adacia Chambers with four counts of second degree murder and for the injuries of 46 others. After a month of mental evaluations, Chambers’ trial will move forward.

Adacia Chambers and her family were both present at Thursday afternoon's hearing. As deputies escorted Chambers into the courtroom, she remained emotionless.

Last month, Judge Louis Duel ordered Chambers to undergo psychiatric evaluation in Vinita. After reviewing those findings, Judge Duel found Chambers capable and competent to stand trial.

But the evaluation conducted by a doctor for the defense suggested she was severely ill and not competent to stand trial on murder and assault charges.

Though, Chambers' attorney, Tony Coleman, was not surprised by the difference in mental evaluation results.

“Mine was done close in time. Theirs [evaluation] was done some time later and there was some factors that played in to when they did theirs,” said Chambers’ Attorney Tony Coleman.

Judge Duel granted Coleman's request to revisit the competency issue at a later date. Chambers' father told News 9 in October, his daughter has been treated for mental illness in the past.

Coleman said at this time it's too soon to comment on a defense strategy including whether he'll use an insanity defense.

Law enforcement and prosecutors are still working to collect evidence against Chambers. A preliminary hearing is set for April 6th.
