The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation released the name of the man shot and killed by a Mayes County police officer Wednesday evening.

Mayes County Sheriff Mike Reed said the call went out as a barricaded suspect in the community of Sportsman Acres, about four miles southeast of Pryor.

An officer was just about to go off duty when a woman ran into the department saying she needed help because her father, Sammy Echols Jr., had a gun and locked himself in the bedroom.

Reed said when the officer arrived Echols came out with a rifle.

The officer told him to drop it, and he did, but picked it up again and pointed it at the officers.

The officer shot Echols who was pronounced dead at the Mayes County Hospital.

The district attorney will decide if the shooting was legally justified.
