T’ona Edwards hit a go-ahead fast break lay-up with 12 seconds to lift No. 21/22 Oklahoma women’s basketball to a 71-68 road victory over Washington on Sunday at Alaska Airlines Arena.

Down 68-63 with 2:10 remaining in the game, the Sooners (7-1) used an 8-0 run to close out the game. Maddie Manning cut the deficit down to 68-67 with 0:49 and OU picked up a stop defensively to set up the Edwards lay-up in transition to take the lead.

Manning, who led OU with 15 points, came up with a block and then converted a pair of free throws to seal the win for the Sooners. The Sooners finished the second half with a .516 shooting percentage (16 of 31) and .455 from 3-point range (5 of 11).

“The last two minutes were a blur,” head coach Sherri Coale said after the win. “T’ona Edwards made two great plays in the final minute and our defensive intensity at the end was outstanding. I thought we played through some physicality in the post throughout the night. I’m very proud of our collective resolve and how we battled in the end to earn the win.”

Gabbi Ortiz scored 12 points, her third straight game in doubles figures, and dished three assists. Kaylon Williams scored 11 points for the Sooners and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds in 19 minutes of action. Edwards filled the stat sheet with six points, five assists, five rebounds and two steals.

Washington (6-2) stretched its early lead out to 17-10 with 1:25 left in the first quarter, but OU knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers from Derica Wyatt and McKenna Treece to close the frame down 19-16. The Huskies’ advantage once again reached nine points with less than two minutes remaining in the first half, but another Wyatt triple and a free throw from Vionise Pierre-Louis cut the deficit down to 34-29 at halftime.

After playing just three minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, Williams provided an immediate spark for the Sooners scoring seven of OU’s 18 points in the third quarter. The Sooners used a 13-3 run over the final 4:40 of the frame to take a 47-45 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The Huskies’ Kelsey Plum, the nation’s leading scorer enter Sunday’s game, finished with a game-high 30 points on 10 of 27 shooting. Washington’s Chantel Osahor led all players with 13 rebounds and finished with 13 points for a double-double.

The Sooners held Washington to a .343 shooting percentage on 24 of 70 from the floor. The Huskies were 7 of 27 (.259) from 3-point range and 13 of 18 (.722) from the free throw line. OU won the rebounding battle, 46-41, and finished with 15 assists in the win.

The Sooners conclude their non-conference road slate on Wednesday as OU travels to in-state foe Tulsa. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
