CUSHING, Oklahoma -

Parents in Cushing are in shock after their daughter was shot and killed at a motel in Fort Worth, Texas. Her family said the shooting was random, that their daughter did not know the suspect.

And now Tyera Mukes is dead at 24 years old after a reported felon opened fire on Nov. 30 in the lobby of a Motel 6 near 6600 S Freeway.

“Apparently, he was hiding between two pop machines, came out, put the gun to her head point blank range and shot,” Wendy Sullivan, Mukes’ mother said.

Police said the man arrested in connection to the shooting, 34-year-old Joshua M. Lewis, is also wanted for another homicide that same morning about eight miles away.

“It really hurts me. It hurts me because she was my baby,” she said.

Sullivan said her daughter Tyera Mukes grew up in Cushing and she had moved to Fort Worth a few years ago.

“A small town girl wanted to get in a big city and she did … and wrong place and wrong time and now, I don’t have a daughter and my grandkids don’t have a mom,” Sullivan told News 9.

Mukes leaves behind a 5-year-old girl who was living with Sullivan in Cushing.

“She went to school the other day and Santa Claus came to her school and she wanted Santa Claus to bring her momma back,” she said about Mukes’ young daughter.

Mukes also had a 1-year-old boy, who lived with her in Texas.

But her roots were here in Oklahoma, where this tragedy is taking a toll on the entire family. They are both emotionally and financially drained from this devastating news.

“She was a good person, so God got an angel,” Sullivan said.

Mukes’ funeral is set for 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church-North in Cushing.
