How Oklahoma Matches Up With SEC

Posted: Updated:

Oklahoma is headed to the college football playoff on New Year’s Eve to show they belong among the nation’s best teams. Throughout much of the United States, there’s a belief that the SEC is the best conference in college football. The conference has plenty of historic programs, and a school from the Southeastern Conference won the title in seven straight seasons from 2006-12.

To give an idea of how the Sooners stack up with schools from the SEC, here’s a breakdown of the all-time matchups with each program:

The Crimson Tide are considered to be the face of college football’s elite, but the Sooners actually hold a three game winning streak against Alabama, and are 3-1-1 all-time in the series. Bob Stoops was the Sooners’ coach in all three of those wins (’02,’03, ’14), and the only Alabama victory came in 1963 at the Orange Bowl when the Crimson Tide won 17-0.

The Razorbacks have a historic program, but trail the Sooners 10-4-1 in the two school’s all-time series. Oklahoma and Arkansas have only played three times since 1978, but OU holds a two-game win streak with victories in the Cotton bowl in 2002 and in the Orange Bowl in 1987.

The Tigers and Sooners have squared off only one time back in 1972 at the Sugar Bowl, when Oklahoma won 40-22.

Back in 2009 the Sooners and Gators battled it out in the Orange Bowl for the National Championship, and Florida walked away on top with a 24-14 victory. It was the only time the two schools have played, and it’s a game that many OU fans thought they could win with playmakers such as Sam Bradford, DeMarco Murray and Gerald McCoy on the roster.

Oklahoma and Georgia have never played.

It’s been awhile since we’ve seen the Wildcats and Sooners play, but OU holds a 2-1 lead on the all-time series, while winning games in 1980 and 1982. The lone Kentucky win came in 1951 when the Wildcats defeated OU in the Sugar Bowl.

Oklahoma won the first time the Sooners played the Tigers back in 1950, but LSU and Nick Saban got the best of Stoops’ Sooners in 2004 when the Tigers won 21-14 to claim the National Title.

Mississippi State

The Sooners have never played against Mississippi State.

The Tigers weren’t in the SEC at the time, but Oklahoma leads the all-time series 67-24-5. OU’s largest margin of victory came in 1886 when the Sooners won 77-0.

Ole Miss

The Rebels won 27-25 the only time these two schools played back in 1999.

South Carolina

Oklahoma has never played against the Gamecocks.

Oklahoma leads the all-time series 3-1 with the Sooners winning the last three matchups (’68,’14,’15).

Texas A&M

OU has a 19-12 advantage over Texas A&M, but the Aggies won the last two times these two played back in the 2013 Cotton Bowl. In that game, Johnny Manziel showed why he won the Heisman Trophy.

Oklahoma leads the series 2-0-1 over Vanderbilt, with the OU wins coming in 19
