OKLAHOMA CITY -

A metro family will be looking for a new place to live after they escaped their burning home early Thursday morning in southwest Oklahoma City.

Crews responded to the fire at a home in the 1400 block of  S.W. 37th Street. A woman who lives at the home with her 6-month-old baby and 7-year-old child are lucky to be alive. The fire chief said the woman woke up just after 3 a.m. because she heard an explosion of some kind. She ran to the garage and saw the fire.

The woman said she slammed the door, grabbed her kids and called 911.

The fire chief said they have a very good idea of what caused the fire. It started on the west side of the garage and spread to the attic. Crews were able to knock it down but it damaged about 25 percent of the home.

At this point, he said this appears to be an accident.

Right now it's not clear if the home at smoke detectors installed or if the ones they had weren't working.

Battalion Chief Chris Copeland wants to remind people the department is more than willing to install smoke detectors for free to anyone who needs one
