Fresh off a Bedlam victory, a Big 12 championship and all but a lock for the College Football Playoff, several Sooners spent Monday reflecting on the regular season.

“It’s been a pretty special run. I’d say us focusing and doing our job is what’s gotten us here but then also the fact that we’re enjoying every step of the way,” quarterback Baker Mayfield said. “We’re making it fun and competitive. Going up against the first-team defense every Tuesday and Wednesday and it’s heated, it gets chippy and ultimately our coaching staff has gotten us ready and they hold us to a very high standard, which is good because we need to be held to that high a standard.”

“The mentality changed after the Texas game. I feel like there was just a whole mentality switch,” said Sterling Shepard. “We sat down as a group and said that some things have to change and we did a great job of changing them and sticking with it the entire season. That nine-game stretch is pretty hard on your body but everybody stuck to what we knew and the mentality just changed for us.”

Several Sooners will be up for postseason awards, including Mayfield who may just swing an invite to New York as a Heisman candidate.

“The man’s a competitor and he gives it his all every game,” Shepard said. “The things that he does on the field and takes care of stuff off the field he’s just such a leader, why not be the Heisman?”
