OKLAHOMA CITY -

Although temperatures were below freezing, shoppers turned out by the hundreds this Black Friday for deals on hot items, braving the crowds and the cold.

As rain came down for most of the day, shoppers flocked to malls around the metro area, including the Outlet Shoppes in Oklahoma City which are mostly outdoors with only a few thoroughfares covered by tented canopies.

“We were actually quite surprised. We're very happy with the way traffic has been today. So we're happy to see everyone is out shopping,” said Outlet Shoppes marketing director Savannah Butler.

Butler said they expected sales this year to be just under the totals from 2014, despite the weather.

Some came prepared with hats and scarves. Others found that their warmth came for a price.

“I don't really care. I'm pretty warm. I actually just bought this jacket at a Black Friday sale. It's keeping me warm,” one outlet shopper said. “I ain't even worried about the cold.”

On the inside, where things were warm and dry at Penn Square Mall, Black Friday marks the start of the holiday season. Shoppers there said they weren't about to let a little damp weather, dampen the mood.

“It's Black Friday. I think it's just part of the whole thing. Good sales and it puts you in the holiday mood,” Caroline Franklin said.

She said she thought the mall would be less crowded given the icy driving conditions but added her holiday cheer may not extend past the doors busted by deals this weekend.

“The Thunder game was on the radar but thinking maybe not and then Bedlam game tomorrow but we'll see about that,” she said.
