34th Annual Thanksgiving Community Dinner Set To Kick Off In Edmond

Posted: Updated:
EDMOND, Oklahoma -

Volunteers are in the kitchen gearing up to serve thousands a holiday dinner in the metro. One of those dinners, the Edmond Community Dinner, is in its 34th year.

When it first started, the Edmond Community Dinner was several different churches each trying to host a dinner and over the years it got too large. So a few years ago the churches got together, pulled in hundreds of volunteers and formed the community dinner.

This year about 3,500 people volunteered to help out. Many of those volunteers started prepping the food on Monday; we're talking 150 turkeys, 500 pounds of sweet potatoes, stuffing and 50 gallons of gravy. Not to mention all the desserts and coffee.

They worked tirelessly to bring all those silver trays from the First Presbyterian church to the UCO Nigh Center, trays of food are carefully labeled and arranged so when people come to eat, everything is set to go.

This event is open to anyone and an organizer tells News 9 there is quite a variety of people who attend this every year.

It is like a restaurant. If you come here, you are seated by a hostess and you're provided a menu. Doors open up at 11 a.m. and volunteers are welcome to come at any time if you'd like to serve or help clean up.

There are several other community dinners today in Norman, Midwest City and Oklahoma City.
