Thousands of people are expected to fly home for the Thanksgiving holiday. But if you're planning to head to the airport, give yourself plenty of extra time.

AAA says nearly 47 million people will travel 50 miles or more this Thanksgiving. You will certainly see longer security lines. Due to the terror threats overseas, TSA is taking its time to screen luggage.

A spokesperson for Will Rogers World Airport says, before you arrive, do your own baggage screening. The obvious item to avoid:  Weapons in your carry-on bag or your purse.

You can check a firearm as long as you follow the proper procedures. And they can be found on your airline's website. Of the 77 airports which serve at least a million passengers a year, Tulsa and Oklahoma City rank in the top 10 of weapons confiscated at the airport.

Keep your carry-on bag light. So many people try to avoid those dreaded baggage fees, but end up packing more than the weight limit or what's allowed in the bag, such as liquids or gels.

The TSA asks you follow the 3-1-1- rule: 3 ounces or less, must fit into 1 Ziploc bag, and 1 per passenger.

Do not wrap gifts. If the contents look suspicious or cannot be seen, TSA officers will have to unwrap them. Consider shipping ahead.
