BRYAN COUNTY, Oklahoma -

A Colbert police officer fatally shot a man Saturday night during an altercation, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation reported.

Christopher Lynn Nichols, 24, died shortly after surgery at the Texoma Medical Center.

About 7:30 p.m., an officer stopped a man in town and found out the man had several traffic warrants for his arrest. The man ran away from the officer.

When the officer caught up with the man, the two got into a physical altercation. The man tackled the officer and started punching the officer in the face, the OSBI said Sunday.

The officer pulled out his weapon and fired several times at Nichols.

The OSBI said it will not release the name of the officer and agents are investigating the officer-involved shooting.

The district attorney will determine if the shooting was justified.
