Instant Analysis: OSU's Perfection Ends Against Baylor

Posted: Updated:
STILLWATER -

Baylor (9-1, 6-1) rolled into Stillwater on Saturday and stunned Oklahoma State (10-1, 7-1) 45-35. It was the Bears' first win in Stillwater since 1939. Here’s some instant analysis, stick around for the full recap.

What it means

OSU’s College Football Playoff chances took a major hit. In order to get it at this point, OSU will have to beat Oklahoma next Saturday and have a bunch of help. The Cowboys will likely need Notre Dame to lose to Stanford and Baylor to lose to TCU or Texas. Stranger things have happened.

What went well

Not much. This was a total team loss, and a very disappointing one at that. OSU just seemed out of sync all night in what was perhaps the biggest home game in school history.

What didn’t

So much. Another slow start put the Cowboys in a hole, while the run game was nonexistent. OSU ran 23 times for just eight yards against, let’s just say, a not-so-hot defense. The Cowboys defense got burned deep twice for touchdowns by third-string quarterback Chris Johnson, who replaced the injured Jarrett Stidham at halftime. Johnson also ran for a fourth-quarter score. Johnson began the season as a wide receiver.

Game ball

Jalen McClesky, who entered Saturday’s showdown as OSU’s fifth-leading receiver, caught a pair of touchdowns to keep OSU in the game. James Washington also caught a couple of TDs, but dropped a crucial would-be touchdown in the second half that essentially ended the Cowboys’ comeback hopes.

What’s next

A Bedlam with plenty to play for next Saturday. OSU will host the rival Sooners with at least a share of the Big 12 title on the line.
