Sixth Woman Testifies Against Former OKC Police Officer

Another woman testified about rape and the fear of coming forward in the Daniel Holtzclaw trial Wednesday.

He is the former Oklahoma City police officer accused of abusing his position of authority to sexually assault 13 women in his patrol district. Holtzclaw is charged with 36 felony counts.

On Wednesday morning, a sixth woman took the stand to testify against the fired officer.

And so did her father and her boyfriend.

The woman is currently an inmate at the Oklahoma County jail and admitted to being a prostitute.

She testified Holtzclaw caught her with drugs, gave her a ride home and then followed her inside and raped her.

She told the jury that he kept his uniform and gun belt on when he forced himself on her, and told her it was better than going to county.

The woman testified that she told her father about the attack, but he testified he did not bother to report it to police because in his words “policemen stick together” and he figured nothing would be done about it.

Inside the courtroom were members of Holtzclaw's family, but also complete strangers, like Kristen Swartley who came to support the 13 women have been called to testify.

“The things that they say happened, I think that would be really hard to say,” Swartley said. “Especially when they feel that they don't have the support. They've obviously had some trauma in their lives. It can be a difficult thing to talk about.”

Swartley said she heard about the trial through friends and through social media.

The 30-year-old music teacher said though she doesn't know any of the victims, she came wearing a teal ribbon, which is supposed to signify support for the women who say they were sexually assaulted by the former officer.

“I just came to be a presence and support them in telling their stories,” Swartley said.

Holtzclaw has admitted to having contact with all 13 women during the course of his police duties, but denies any sexual abuse took place.

The trial is scheduled to last through November and may go into December. But the jury will be getting a break. They are off both Thursday and Friday of this week and next.
