OKLAHOMA CITY -

Americans spend an average of 40 hours a month using apps on their phones and tablets. That can cause serious battery drain, and it turns out, some apps use up more power than others.

A new study from online security firm AVG discovered which apps are the biggest battery drainers.

For social media, it's SnapChat. Facebook has been dethroned.

Movie-streaming service "Netflix" is high on the list. So are shopping apps like Wal-Mart.

Tech experts say lots of apps eat up battery life even when you're not using them. For example, some constantly pull your GPS and send notifications. To change this, you can go into settings and turn off what's called "background app refresh."

It turns out, simply closing an app when you're done using it may eat up more battery than it saves.

"Because when you start it up again it has to re-download and re-pull in all this memory," said Bridget Carey, CNET Tech Editor.

Another way to save battery life is to switch off Bluetooth, GPS, and Wi-Fi if you're not using them. Also a good idea is to lower the brightness on your screen.
