New Official Number Of American Children With Autism Stirs Controversy

Posted: Updated:

Some new government figures on the number of American children with autism has stirred up controversy. They show the numbers are much higher the previously thought.

New numbers from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finds as many as 1 in 45 children may be autistic. What makes this latest report so controversial, another still current government survey puts the estimate at 1 in 68.

A spokesperson for the group "Autism Speaks" thinks the CDC's numbers jumped because the latest questionnaire presented to parents changed the order and content of some questions.

Despite the latest figures from the patient-reported survey, doctors emphasize they will not replace the government's official number of 1 in 68.
