GUTHRIE, Oklahoma -

A special honor was held Wednesday night in Guthrie for one of Oklahoma’s finest.

Bob Cobb, 91, was known for decades, because of the local Ford Dealership he operated.

However, 70 years ago during World War II, Sgt. “Bobby” Cobb was a Tank Commander in the 9th Armored Division that was part of the American wave that stormed the beaches of Normandy.

As Tank Commander, Cobb also played a role in saving the last remaining bridge over the Rhine River, a bridge the Nazis were desperately trying to destroy.

Cobb planned to attend a ceremony at Guthrie’s Trinity Episcopal Church in his honor.

Guthrie Mayor Steven Gentling read a proclamation, calling it “Bob Cobb Day."

However, Cobb fell ill Tuesday night, and died at Oklahoma City’s Mercy Hospital just after that ceremony Wednesday night, with this wife of 69 years Louise at his side.

Church Elder John Pearson said Cobb never told anyone he was a decorated war hero.

“It was a very significant time, and Bobby never let anybody know much about that. Matter of fact, I’ve known him for 10 years, and until the last two weeks, I didn’t know anything about it,” Pearson said.
