OSSAA Votes To Allow Moment Of Silence Before Football Playoff Games

Posted: Updated:
OKLAHOMA CITY -

The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) voted to allow a moment of silence before every football playoff game.

Oklahoma’s Attorney General concluded their old policy was too far reaching in prohibiting those who attend a playoff or championship game to organize a prayer, even in silence.

The board decided Wednesday to allow for a moment of silence to be observed before all playoff games.

It will be announced over the PA system that you can reflect, meditate, pray or engage in other silent activities.

“Similar to the moment of silence that is already occurring in public schools at the beginning of each day,” says OSSAA attorney Mark Grossman.

Even though the policy allows for the moment of silence, it will still be up to each host school or venue to observe the moment and make the PA announcement.

The new policy takes effect immediately.

“I think it’s a good compromise,” says Oklahoma District 20 Representative Bobby Cleveland, who had been pushing for OSSAA prayer policy change for months.
