A group of gearheads in Norman is finding beauty in rusted out relics.

The team is overhauling a 1971 Opel GT. The car doesn’t run and has been pretty much stripped out by the crew.

“It’s full of fuzz and gunk,” said Abbey Hovorka about the interior of the car that resembles a smaller corvette.

“I think it’s got a lot of attitude even though we haven’t had it on the road yet,” said Kyler Norman who is leading the team.

Once redone, the car will compete in the “24 hour of Lemons” in the spring. It’s an endurance race dedicated to clunker cars.

“Many people’s goals are to get out there and finish, because that is a very big challenge at Lemons,” said Hovorka.

The team, which has more than 10 including four drivers, already met one race requirement. It spent less than $500 on its car.

“He was an Elvis Impersonator,” Shelby Fitzsimmons said about who sold them the car.

The crew must make the car race safe.  That includes roll bars and other safety features.

“It’s great for people who have always wants to work on cars, but haven’t had a chance,” said Norman.

“Right now I’d give it a 4, but we are going for a 6,” added Norman.
