Area law enforcement agencies are warning against another IRS phone scam that is making its way through the metro.

Chickasha resident Sara Riley said she received three phone calls from IRS scammers in the past week. The caller said Riley is being sued by the IRS, and she needs to call a number with a 202 area code.

Riley knew the calls were bogus, and forwarded them to a friend at the Grady County Sheriff’s Office. However, she said she worries about elderly folks who get the same voice message.

“That’s what I thought about exactly,” she said. “Out of fear, they’re going to call these people, and God knows what kind of information they’ll get out of them.”

Grady County Sheriff Jim Weir warned to never give out personal information to callers who claim they represent the IRS.  And he said if they leave a message, don’t call them back.

Oklahoma’s Attorney General’s Office said IRS investigators don’t call, they notify people in writing.

Assistant Deputy Attorney General Abby Dillsaver said out of the thousand or so reports they take each year on phone scams, 700 of them have to do with people who claim they represent the IRS.
