Deer Creek parents are preparing for May 2016 when they say a federal grant that funds three of the district's five school resource officers will run out, and their efforts didn't slow down on Halloween.

Among the zombies, superheroes and stickmen was a mom on a mission Saturday evening. Amber Hunsucker went door-to-door on Halloween night, not to ask for treats, but for support instead.

Her petition is aimed at keeping school resource officers in Deer Creek Schools.

Residents ready to donate to her cause signed in costume and also by the dozens online.

Hunsucker said she and other parents want to take the budget burden off of school officials and raise money to keep school resource officers after grant money goes away.

“We, as parents, have the responsibility to protect our children and support our district,” she said.

She's determined to raise the $114,000 she said is needed to keep officers in schools for another year, even if it means meeting people at their doorsteps and spreading the word on the streets.

“We just have to do what we have to do,” she added.

Hunsucker has a daughter in second grade at Spring Creek Elementary and said sending her to a school without resource officers would be alarming.

After several school incidents in the metro over the last few months, she became motivated to make this happen and find the funding.

“I’m not going to depend on the government to protect my child. I’m going to take it upon myself to ensure that this will not go away,” she told News 9.

The next step is for her to present the signatures and her sanction application for the Deer Creek Safety Foundation to the school board for review.
