So Far, So Good: Thunder Tops Spurs In Donovan's Debut

Posted: Updated:

The boys are back in town.

For the first time in a long time, the Thunder had a full and healthy roster. And for the first time in a long time, the Thunder is above .500.

Billy Donovan earned his first win as an NBA coach as Oklahoma City pulled out a 112-106 win over San Antionio Wednesday night at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

But as they usually are, the Spurs were the fly in the ointment. San Antonio made this extremely difficult.

Like most contests between these teams, this was close to the end. The Thunder trailed 97-90 with six minutes left, but surged on a 9-0 run and re-took the lead on a Kevin Durant 3-ball.

Danny Green and Tony Parker scored back-to-back buckets to give San Antonio a 103-101 lead with 2:33 to play, but Dion Waiters responded in a big way. Waiters drained a pair of fallaway jumpers to put OKC up three. Westbrook followed that with a corner 3 as the shot clock wound down to put the Thunder up 108-103 with less than a minute to go.

Kawhi Leonard responded with a 3-point play to bring San Antonio back within two, but OKC sealed it at the line.

Westbrook picked up where he left off last season. The 2014-15 scoring champ dropped 31 points on 12 of 23 shooting to go with 10 assists. Durant played fairly well in his return with 22 points and six boards. Enes Kanter was a monster off the Thunder bench with 15 points and 16 rebounds in just 24 minutes.  Waiters, D.J. Augustin and Anthony Morrow all finished with eight.

Leonard was a one-man wrecking crew. The Spurs’ rising star scored 32 points on 13 of 22 shooting and snagged eight rebounds. He also grabbed three steals. LaMarcus Aldridge was held to just 11 points and five rebounds in his Spurs debut, while Manu Ginobili sdded 11 off the pine.

The Thunder plays at Orlando on Friday night.
