OKLAHOMA CITY -

A metro man died following an attack by five pit bulls and now, his family wants justice.

They say the attack happened as he was just trying to help a friend on Oklahoma City's southwest side.

Edgar Brown, 60, spent nearly two weeks in the hospital before he died Friday from a number of complications.

Brown's family laid him to rest Tuesday and they're hoping the owner of those dogs will face criminal charges.

“My theory is this, if that dog committed a murder, as far as I’m concerned the owner committed murder. He should get the same penalty as if he had done it,” Dexter Brown said.

On Oct. 6, Dexter Brown said his brother, known to his family and close friends as “Tootie,” was asked to go over to a friend's rental home to take out the trash.

“He was trying to hold the gate shut,” Dexter Brown said.

Dexter said there's a gate between the home and the area where five pit bulls were.

“He was holding the dogs, holding the gate shut trying to keep the dogs from coming through to get him,” Dexter Brown said. “But the dogs had a hold on the fence, so they left the gate, ran from the hole, and they all came in there and attacked him.”

The dogs mauled Edgar near the front yard of the rental home off SW 38 and Youngs Blvd.

“He was hollering, help. Somebody honked their horn and then they got off of him and ran back through the fence,” Dexter Brown said.

Edgar was rushed to OU Medical Center.

“He had blood all over him, all over the floor, everywhere. Flesh was hanging off his arms. It was the most awful mess I’ve ever seen,” Dexter Brown said.

Dexter Brown said while his brother was in the hospital, it was a downward spiral. His brother suffered complications including a heart attack which lead to a triple bypass surgery.

Doctors also had to remove his legs and part of his arm because of an infection.

“And we buried him today. We had his funeral today,” Dexter Brown said. “He was the most wonderful little brother you’ve ever had in your life. Had a big heart, and he loved dogs. That’s what’s bad about it, he loved dogs.”

All five pit bulls have been euthanized, but the family still wants the dog's owner charged.

Oklahoma City police are working the case.
