The Oklahoma Sooners improved to 5-1 on the season after a 55-0 win over Kansas State on Saturday. Here's the instant analysis of what went down.

10/16/15: Flight Problems For Sooners

How the Sooners won..

This was clearly a redemption game for OU as they wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard. It only took the Sooners a little over one minute to score their first touchdown on a 22-yard reception by Sterling Shepard.

OU put the Texas loss in the rear view mirror, and set the tone throughout the entire first half by scoring five total touchdowns (all passing).

The Oklahoma defense was ferocious as well, and didn’t allow the Wildcats to gain any sort of momentum. Mike Stoops’ game plan was so effective that KSU opted to bench started quarterback Joe Hubener for Cody Cook in the second quarter.

What they could’ve done better..

This was nearly a flawless game for the Sooners, but there’s always room for improvement. There were a few times in the first half where one could argue that Mayfield held onto the ball too long resulting in a couple sacks.

The only other errors that stick out come on a couple of dropped passes. Dede Westbrook dropped a deep ball from Mayfield early in the game and Jeffery Mead dropped a for sure touchdown in the third quarter.

Game ball

There were a lot of people who contributed to this OU win, but Mayfield’s performance on Saturday was remarkable. The Sooner quarterback completed 20 of 27 passes for 282 yards and five touchdowns-- while sitting out the entire fourth quarter.

Mayfield had some help from his talented receivers with Shepard and Westbrook each eclipsing 80 receiving yards.

What’s next?

The Sooners will be back on Norman on Saturday when they host Kliff Kingsbury and Texas Tech at 2:30 p.m.
