Oklahoma Driver's License Still Acceptable ID For Flying

Oklahomans planning to travel by air this year can rest assured that their Oklahoma driver’s license will be accepted by TSA at the security checkpoint.

The state of Oklahoma has received a one year extension on meeting the requirements of the REAL ID Act.

Governor Mary Fallin’s office and the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety (DPS) announced the extension from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Wednesday, which will run through October 10, 2016.

Over the last several months, Oklahoma travelers have been concerned that they would have to secure a passport to use as identification in order to fly.  The issue is related to the fact that the state of Oklahoma is currently not compliant with the REAL ID Act.   With the announcement of the extension, flyers will be able to use their Oklahoma driver’s license for at least one more year.

The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005.  The Act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and prohibits Federal agencies from accepting licenses from states that do not meet the standards.

The governor stated that she will work with this legislative session, DPS, Oklahoma’s Congressional delegation and DHS on a permanent solution for Oklahoma.
