The Oklahoma City Thunder has partnered with Devon Energy to encourage kids to engage in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) as part of the team’s new Devon Thunder Explorers program.

Throughout the season, kids who sign up to be Explorers will take part in STEM-focused activities and experiments as they examine some of the forces at work behind Thunder Basketball.

Fans have two options for signing up their children for this program. The free registration offers a monthly notification of activities and experiments for children to complete on their own, as well as STEM-related facts and updates. Members can also upgrade to purchase the full Devon Thunder Explorers kit, which includes an exclusive Rumble the Bison bobblehead, a backpack full of supplies, ticket offers and additional benefits.

“This new program is a wonderful opportunity to channel our young fans’ passion for Thunder Basketball toward a curiosity for science, technology, engineering and math,” said Christine Berney, Thunder vice president of Community Relations. “Community and education leaders across the state recognize the need for developing STEM skills to prepare Oklahoma’s youth for success in today’s workforce. We hope this program complements other important initiatives happening across our state to foster STEM education."

“At Devon, our goal is to be a good neighbor, and that includes supporting ingenuity in education,” said Wendi Schuur, Devon’s director of community relations. “Our company has identified STEM instruction and learning as a top priority, so we’re pleased and proud to participate in this exciting new Devon Thunder Explorers program.”

Oklahoma City Public Schools teachers for fourth- through sixth-grade students can also sign up to lead Devon Thunder Explorers activities in their classrooms, with a monthly prize awarded to one student in each classroom who excels in meeting the program’s challenges.

Fans can sign up for the Devon Thunder Explorers now at okcthunder.com/explorers. OKCPS teachers who wish to register their classrooms are advised to email explorers@okcthunder.com for the registration link.
