The Democratic presidential candidates finally mixed it up Tuesday night with their first debate on CNN in Las Vegas.

Some initial observations.

I think voters who watched were as curious as I was to see how Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, the two front-runners matched up, and also to hear from O'Malley, Webb and Chafee.

It was a lively debate, and despite the pundits' predictions that the candidates would focus their fire on the Republican candidates, they went after each other, Clinton and Sanders especially.

A couple of the candidates accused Clinton of being too hawkish, to quick to want to use military force in Syria. She downplayed that but did say we need stronger leadership in the Middle East seeming to part with the Obama administration.

Sanders seemed to me the most aggressive, admitted he's not a capitalist, a "casino capitalist" as he put it, hopes to make the nation understand what a "democratic socialist" is.

Perhaps the line of the debate belonged to Sanders, when asked about Clinton's email problems. He said, "people are sick and tired of hearing about your (blankety) emails."

On that, they shook hands.

Interesting debate.
