Big 12 Power Rankings: Cowboys Rise To No. 2

Posted: Updated:

We’re through six weeks of the 2015 college football season, and the Big 12 is shaping up about how we all thought it would. TCU, Baylor and Oklahoma State are all still undefeated, but last week’s No. 1, OU, fell off track in a loss to Texas. With that said, it’s time to unveil the second batch of power rankings. Enjoy:

1. TCU (6-0, 3-0)

+1

The Frogs are the new No. 1 after an impressive come-from-behind road win at Kansas State. Some may not be impressed by TCU after a couple of close calls this season, but they’ve played a harder conference slate thus far than Baylor, and that makes them the top dog for now.

2. Oklahoma State (6-0, 3-0)

+2

OSU rises two spots, passing Baylor in the process. The Pokes have two quality conference wins over KSU and now at West Virginia, and somehow despite a pitiful ground game, continue to find ways to win.  The Cowboys have a bye week coming, followed by a date with Kansas, so 7-0 is all but guaranteed.

3. Baylor (5-0, 2-0)

- -

You could make a good argument that the Bears should be first or second here, but they’re still being punished for their bottom-of-the-barrel nonconference schedule. Baylor drubbed Kansas by 59 on Saturday, but things get tougher going forward. They’ll face a desperate West Virginia squad this Saturday in Waco.

4. Oklahoma (4-1, 1-1)

-3

The Sooners fell on their face on Saturday against a 1-4 Texas team. OU got outplayed, outcoached and outeverythinged against their bitter rival, and now must face the reality that hopes of the College Football Playoff will likely have to wait another season.

5. Kansas State (3-2, 0-2)

+1

KSU jumps a spot for playing a pair of 6-0 teams to the absolute wire. No, they didn’t win, but coach Bill Snyder proved again that his Wildcats are game for anything. KSU’s brutal stretch continues on Saturday against OU.

6. West Virginia (3-2, 0-2)

-1

West Virginia forced three Mason Rudolph interceptions, held OSU’s running back duo to a combined 55 yards, and still found a way to lose a home night game. The Mountaineers fell behind 17-2, which put them behind the 8-ball for the rest of the night. Dana Holgorsen needs to find some answers.

7. Texas Tech (4-2, 1-2)

- -

The Red Raiders pounded Iowa State on Saturday to hold serve, and they head to Kansas this week to earn win No. 5. We’re still not sure just how good these guys are yet.

8. Texas (2-4, 0-2)

+1

The Longhorns jump just one spot in the poll after what could be a job-saving win for Charlie Strong. Things were headed downhill, fast in Austin, but a win like this could turn things around. But the Horns will stay down here until they can show some consistency.

9. Iowa State (2-3, 1-1)

-1

ISU had a semi-winnable game against Texas Tech on Saturday, but got rolled. It’s hard to see any more wins on the docket.

10. Kansas (0-forever)

- -

The Jayhawks got lit up by Baylor and there really aren’t any signs of hope in Lawrence.
