In a stunning loss, OU falls to Texas 24-17 inside of the Cotton Bowl. Here’s instant analysis of what went down.

How the Sooners lost..

There’s a long list of reasons to why the Sooners lost to Texas on Saturday, but none bigger than OU’s lack of discipline on defense. Oklahoma was without Devante Bond who sat out with an ankle injury, and OU failed to make up for his absence and played poorly overall on defense.

Texas hit the Sooners in the mouth with their one-dimensional rushing attack, and OU continually failed to bring down the Longhorns’ ball carrier. Missed tackles can be credited to the Sooners constant attempts to tackle with their arms instead of their bodies.

What could’ve gone better?

The upfront blocking by the offensive line was horrendous for the Sooners throughout most of the game. We knew it was a weakness for OU, but Mayfield rarely had time to set up in the pocket and look downfield to his receivers, especially in the first half.

The blocking got better in the third quarter, but when the game mattered most on the final Sooner drive, the line allowed two crucial sacks that basically ended the game.

Game ball

I think it’s pretty obvious the game ball should go to the entire Longhorns’ rushing attack, with the Texas defensive line earning honorable mention honors.

The Longhorns rushed for 313 yards, led by D’Onta Foreman and Jerrod Heard, who each eclipsed 100 yards on the day. Throughout the entire game Texas appeared to be the faster team and snuck away with a win.

What’s next?

OU will continue conference play on Saturday when they travel to Manhattan to take on Bill Snyder and the Kansas State Wildcats.
