A wild chase through Oklahoma City on Thursday morning was a case of mistaken identity, but it still paid off.

It started off with an OKC Police officer who thought he saw a wanted fugitive who is facing rape and kidnapping charges.

It ended up not being the man they thought it was, but the man they caught still went to jail.

“What makes this unique and interesting is this was not the person they thought it was,” said Oklahoma City Police Msgt. Gary Knight.  “This was not the fugitive,” he added.

Oklahoma City Police said an officer tried to pull over a man near I-40 and Rockwell, but he sped off and started a chase. At one point, police said the man crashed into another vehicle belonging to the U.S. Marshals Service.

Eventually he crashed near Meridian and Highline Blvd., and then took off running until officers caught him hiding at Celebration Station. That is when they realized it was the wrong guy, but they made the right decision to go after him.

“It's almost a case of serendipity,” Msgt. Knight told News 9.  “We thought we had one person that was a fugitive, in the end, we were wrong with our identification, but it lead us to another fugitive,” he added.

Police said Bruce Griffin had lots of cocaine on him, enough for a drug trafficking charge, as well as marijuana and cash believed to be drug proceeds.

“Sometimes it's not at all what you are expecting, but often times you still get the same result,” Msgt. Knight said.

Griffin was booked on complaints of drug trafficking, assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, possession of drug proceeds and aggravated attempting to elude.
