UTSA has played well at times this season, and could provide a challenge to Rennie Childs and the OSU run defense.

UTSA looked great in its season opener at Arizona. The Roadrunners amassed 525 yards of offense and 29 first downs. The Birds out-rushed the Wildcats by 30 yards and out-passed ‘em by 103. They won the time-of-possession battle by 11 minutes, converted a respectable 8-19 third-down tries and even 2-3 on fourth down.

How did they lose?

10 penalties for 114 yards didn’t help. Neither did San Antonio’s two turnovers, both of which were returned for touchdowns.

Truth is, UTSA coughed up a shot at a premier win. The Roadrunners went on the road and outplayed the No. 20 team in the nation.

So don’t think that they’re not capable of coming into Stillwater and causing problems.

Oklahoma State has received passing grades so far this season, but certainly hasn’t gone above and beyond. The Cowboys have struggled to establish a consistent run game in two closer-than-expected wins, one at Central Michigan and the other against Central Arkansas.

And while UTSA got blasted by Kansas State in game No. 2, the Roadrunners still held the Cats to just four yards per carry.

The bottom line is that the Cowboys will probably find a way to win this game no matter how they run the ball. Quarterback Mason Rudolph has propelled the Pokes behind 667 yards and three touchdowns, and in the process has looked the part of an All American-caliber player. He’s spread the ball around well and looks like he could carry OSU through most games by himself.

But no matter how good Rudolph looks, the Cowboys have another golden opportunity on Saturday to establish the run against a semi-capable opponent, and that’s priority No.1.

We’ll see what happens.
