My 2 Cents: City's Attempt At Cracking Down On Panhandlers

The Oklahoma City City Council is going to begin a push Tuesday to crack down on panhandlers working on medians across the metro.

Ward 6 Councilwoman Meg Salyer said her proposal is backed by six out of seven council members and the Mayor will attack the "explosive" growth in activities that frighten and intimidate many residents.

Panhandlers have become more aggressive. I've seen it, you probably have too.

It's becoming dangerous for them and for motorists.

I'm tired of it, and while I feel sympathetic, I also know many of these people are duping those big-hearted souls who roll down their windows and hand over money.

Most have signs that say they're homeless. The Homeless Alliance says eight out 10 of those panhandlers are NOT homeless.

Offer to pay them money for doing odd jobs and see how many takers you get.

We did a few years back, and when we came back to pick up the guy was long gone.

But that old line "Will work for food" is passé anyway, most move around as if they're incapable of working, and just straight out ask for money, often times from IN the roadway.

I'm going to be following this new effort by city leaders to fine panhandlers on street corners and in medians $500, and I'll let you know where it goes.

I'm Kelly Ogle and that's My 2 Cents.
