Oklahoma was able to pull off the comeback 31-24 win in double overtime that was sealed with a Zack Sanchez interception. Here’s instant analysis of how it happened.

How the Sooners won

It took three quarters to get the offense rolling, but the Sooners came alive in the final frame. Trailing 17-3 with 8:20 left in the game, OU finally scored its first touchdown of the game on a Perine 2-yard touchdown reception to put the Sooners within a touchdown.

The Sooners saw a glimmer of hope, and there was no stopping Oklahoma at that point. The defense forced a three and out on the next possession, which eventually led to another OU touchdown when Mayfield connected with Sterling Shepard for an epic game tying touchdown.

Oklahoma kept the offense rolling in overtime, With Mayfield scoring on their first possession by converting on 4th and goal on the 1 yard-line. Then after getting the ball right back, Shepard was able to tight rope the sideline and score what was the winning touchdown.

Who stepped up..

Early on in the game it appeared that Devante Bond was the only Sooner that came to play. He nearly picked the ball off two separate times in the first quarter, before picking up two crucial sacks in the second quarter. One of his sacks forced Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs to fumble, but the Vols were luckily able to recover.

Bond was in Dobbs face the entire night even if he wasn’t in time for the sack. His pressure was suffocating and it forced multiple hurried passes.

Bond was more instrumental in this second game than he was week one against Akron. The Sooners lined up three defensive lineman most of the time with Eric Striker and Bond both causing havoc off of the edge.

Who could’ve played better..

Plain and simple, besides Sterling Shepard, the Sooners’ receivers struggled throughout the night. There were multiple drops on pivotal plays, with the most crucial mistake coming on the first drive of the game when Dede Westbrook tipped a Mayfield pass that was intercepted by Tennessee’s Todd Kelley Jr.

Also, the offensive line was less than impressive yet again. They did play better in the fourth quarter, but Mayfield was continuously forced out of the pocket, and luckily for the big boys up front, their quarterback was able to cover up some of their mistakes.

What’s next..

The Sooners will have their first early kickoff of 2015 when they host the Tulsa Hurricanes at 11:00 a.m. on September 19.
