OKLAHOMA CITY -

Oklahoma City police identified the man who was shot and killed during Wednesday night’s carjacking as 43-year-old Ruben Alvaro Gonzalez of Oklahoma City. Investigators are still looking for the two people who were last seen driving off in Ruben's SUV.

That SUV was found less than a mile away from where Ruben was shot and killed. But the people responsible for the deadly carjacking are still on the loose. And both his friends and family are just devastated.

“He was a nice person,” said friend Estevan Tigula, “He's a hard worker, so all the time he's working and going to the church.”

Tigula said he was used to seeing his friend Ruben at church at least three times a week. And said he often helped the pastor with baptisms, and would even go pray with fellow parishioners at their homes.

“He's the guy,” said Tigula. “All the time you need him, he is there.”

And those who worked closely with him at Elim Christian Church near SW 25th and Portland agree.

Claudia Gramajo said Ruben was like a brother to her and can't believe he's gone.

“It’s very, very, very sad for me and my husband,” said Gramajo. “And we are destroyed with this - how he passed away.”

His church friends said Gonzalez had driven down to a local mechanic shop near NW 2nd and Penn to pick up his son, who was getting off work. While he was waiting, he was approached by two men who shot him, took his SUV, and then left him for dead.

Claudia said his son heard the gunshots and ran outside to see someone speeding off in his father's car. He then saw his father lying in the street.

“God bless the people who kill him,” said Gramajo. “Because I don't know if it’s the time for him or not, but it’s very sad.”

Both Claudia and Estevan said Ruben was from Guatemala, and had worked for years here in Oklahoma City. They say he would send most of the money he earned to help his family back in Guatemala. Both his wife and three of his kids had just moved up here a few months ago.

“This is so horrible for all the family,” said Gramajo.

The Elim church is helping the Gonzalez family by collecting money to help them pay for burial costs. Contact the church if you’d like to help at (405) 917-1988.

If you have any information that can help police catch the people responsible for this deadly carjacking, you are urged to call the Oklahoma City Homicide Tipline at (405) 297-1200.
