Canadian County deputies make a traffic stop and discover $30,000 worth of gift cards, but those in the vehicle say they have no idea how the cards got there.
Deputies pulled over the 2015 Infinity sport utility vehicle along Interstate 40 near the Cherokee truck stop late Friday night. It didn't take much time for them to become suspicious.
“The vehicle was rented. I think it was due back in Los Angeles two weeks ago, here they are in Oklahoma,” Canadian County Undersheriff Chris West said. “They can’t explain how they got the car, who they got it from.”
A drug dog was called onto the scene and confirmed their suspicions.
“We found four grams of marijuana in one of the pockets in a seat,” West said.
Deputies searched further and found 320 gift cards in various plastic bags stashed among clothing in three pieces of luggage.
But those in the vehicle denied knowing anything about them.
However, investigators think the cards are related to some type of criminal activity, likely related to retail store theft, credit card fraud or identity theft.
“Those are called clues in law enforcement and that gives us reasonable suspicion in that there’s probably a crime that occurred,” West said.
The occupants in the vehicle signed affidavits saying the gift cards weren't theirs. Those cards will be turned over to the district attorney who will determine if charges will be filed.
